One of Vancouver’s newest and most forward-thinking buildings took shape in the city’s downtown skyline when Lord Norman Foster’s Foster + Partners created a 35-story tower adjacent to two renovated 1920s buildings. The Jameson House offers up 23 floors of four articulated tubes of apartments rising above offices and shops on the floors below that help merge the dramatic modern flow of Foster’s creation with the history below.

One of the most iconic residential towers in Vancouver, the design spurs vibrant living through dramatic views of the bay and a design that takes into account the details of the local climate and the seasonal sun paths to curve the four residential tower bays outward, staggering them to ensure views and sunlight reach each apartment, no matter the season. The powerfully curved nature of the building provides visual intrigue when juxtaposed against the historic old-world feel of the Beaux Arts structures below of the Ceperley Rounsefell Building and the Royal Financial Building, complete with a revamp to retain their native design.

Lord Foster explains his work by saying, “Vancouver has a spectacular location, surrounded by mountains and the sea. The design makes the most of the city’s fantastic natural setting, with balconies and deep bay windows looking out toward the landscape.” He says the merging of new construction with restoration and high-density with mixed-use creates a sustainable model for urban living.

With Lord Foster leading the design, it was up to Lynden Door to fulfill the direction, using a mix of painted prefinished hardboard doors and solid core fir doors to match the scenes set in the towering residences. The modern design of Jameson House, designed by one of the world’s leading architects, was made complete by the expertise of Lynden Door, allowing Jameson House to fulfill and showcase high design.
